How to use a pumpkin carving stencil

  1. Pick and print. Open a design, choose your pumpkin size, and download the PDF. Print at 100% (Actual size).
  2. Clean it out. Cut a lid, scoop out the seeds, and scrape the front wall down to about 1 in thick.
  3. Poke the pattern. Tape the printout on and poke holes along the lines with a pin tool.
  4. Carve and light. Saw out the black parts, small ones in the middle first, then put a candle or LED inside.

Questions

Are these carving stencils free?

Yes. Every pattern is free to print for personal use, parties, and classrooms. No sign-up needed.

What do the black and white parts mean?

Cut out the black parts. The white parts stay as pumpkin skin. Every white piece is joined to the rest by a wide bridge, so nothing falls out while you carve.

What size should I print?

Pick your pumpkin size on the design page. A small pumpkin (about 6 in tall) takes a 4 in pattern, a medium one (about 9 in) takes 6 in, and a large one (about 12 in) takes 8 in. You can also type your own width.

How do I get the pattern onto the pumpkin?

Tape the printout to the front of the pumpkin and poke small holes along every line with a pin tool or pushpin, about 1/8 in apart. Take the paper off and you have a dotted outline to cut along.

What tools do I need?

A small serrated pumpkin saw (the kind in carving kits), a big spoon or scoop, a pin tool or pushpin, tape, and a candle or LED light. Kitchen knives are harder to steer and slip more easily.

Can kids carve these?

Kids can scoop, poke the pattern, and pick the design. Leave the sawing to an adult or a careful older kid. If you would rather skip the sharp tools, try one of our painting stencils instead.

How long does a carved pumpkin last?

Usually 3 to 5 days, longer in cool weather. Rub petroleum jelly on the cut edges and keep it out of direct sun. An LED light keeps it from drying out as fast as a real candle.
